sound events don't make sounds

I downloaded Article 262256 "No Sound Events are Played." It directs me to
the registry and tells me to delete "<no name> :REG_SZ: from the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry hive. I found over 30 appearances in various
levels of this hive. Do I remove them all? What will this do to other
programs? Please help me get Windows 2000 Professional to operate properly
with sound signals as called for.
