Sorting contact list

G

Gaderian

When selecting email addresses (when clicking on the To: or Cc: buttons) a
"Select" dialog box appears with a list of my contacts. Although my Contact
listing shows names sorted by surname, this select dialog box sorts by first
name. Very annoying especially because I cannot find the setting to correct
this.

I've tried attaching a .jpg of the dialog box for all to see but I don't
thing this newsgroup allows attachments. Forgive me if the duplicate
appears.

Any ideas?

This is among the most frequently asked questions in this group. No need to
post any binaries.
Feel free to search the group before posting.
If you wanted to post helpful information, you would have posted your
Outlook version.

The most frequent question asked about the Outlook Address Book is "why
won't it sort the way I told it to?" Simple answer. Even though we all know
that our Outlook Address Book is simply a view of our Contacts, Microsoft
did not configure it to abide by the settings we chose for our Contacts.
Instead, they hid the sort settings for the Outlook Address Book where no
one could ever find them. Depending on your version and mail support mode of
Outlook, you can sort the Outlook Address Book this way:

98/2000 in Corporate/Workgroup mode:
Tools menu > Services > Highlight the Outlook Address Book service > Click
Properties > Set sort order

98/2000 Internet Mail Only:
Tools menu > Address Book > View menu > Sort by

Outlook 2002/2003:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

You can't attach anything here. What version of OL? You can change the
display order. Look up 'Last Name' in help and you'll find instructions.

I have Office XP, and am using Outlook from that version. After upgrading
from Office 2000, I am still having problems having the "display of my
contacts, by surname, alphabetically. Even though I "save as" in that order,
the display name is by "first name" which is driving me nuts as I use this
for business and keep all of my contacts by surname. Anyone know of a fix.
I tried the fix for "Outlook 2002/2003" outlined in your instructions and
that did NOT correct the problem.

Any one have a fix for Outlook XP?
Thanks.

Everything I posted is correct and works for your version.
Did you restart Outlook?
What do you mean you "save as" in that order? There is no such option. The
File As.. field is what you need to pay attention to.

Glad it worked. Sometimes it's easy to miss a step. I wish I knew why they
made such a simple feature so undiscoverable.
