Sophos performance puzzle

I have a problem that I've spent some time on that I'd really like to solve.
I use a Dell C540 laptop (1.6GHz) for work, and I recently purchased a new
Toshiba Satellite SA40 (2.6GHz) for my wife. After loading Office 2k onto
the Tosh, all seemed fine except for speed- many operations like starting a
doc in work, or even opening control panel, took up to 10 seconds.

I fairly quickly realised it was related to Sophos which I had put on the
Tosh (our work license agreement allows this). For example, if I set
Intercheck to check on write, but not read, it was fine.

However, the slower Dell has exactly the same version of Sophos (3.8), and
it is not noticeably slowed by checking on read.

I started to wonder if there was a problem with the new Tosh, so I tried
some of my own trials, including xcopying large folders, and I downloaded
some benchmarking applications to compare the 2 machines. In all of these
tests, the Tosh came out about 50% faster than the Dell.

I moved onto memory- the Dell has 512 and the Tosh 256. So I moved 256 from
the Dell to the Tosh. This didn't really make any difference. The advanced
performance options are also the same.

I then searched the registries for sophos settings to compare on the
machines- again no real differences.

I can't think of anything else to check. Is there some peculiar issue with
Sophos running on a Toshiba? Is there something that av programs do which is
revealing a problem in the Tosh?

Any guidance about what to look for or what the problem could be would be
much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

We experienced simmilar problem with Dell. In our case problem was i
two parallel antivirus softwares.

Originally Dell came with Norton Anti-Virus installed. We deinstalle
it and put Sophos on machine, but some Norton's libraries left ove
somehow (it was noticeable in M$Word toolbar saying 'Checking th
document...' or something like that).

Since we are bunch of computer engineers we don't have a time for game
with software which is not a game :) and we simply reinstalled Window
from scratch, put Sophos and - voila! Everything worked for us.

Hope this will help.
