Here is my problem, I am running window xp home addition and I have symantic
anti virus protection with pop up blocker. I have had it far a few months now
and everything was working find. They have it where you can check your
security of your computer through there web site and I would check mine at
least once a week if not more. But now when I go there to check my security,
it does not recognize my version of windows or my internet explorer(which is
internet explorer 6). It keeps giving me an error code of 001. I been trying
to figure this out for the last week. I noticed that I was starting to get
pop ups again and I couldn't figure out why. I had a popup blocker with my
anti virus and also I had the latest yahoo toolbar with it but it wouldn't
work. I had also downloaded the latest xp service pack 2 but when these
problems started happening I uninstalled it trying to fix it. I also
ininstalled my yahoo tool bar. When that did not fix it i tryed to download
the yahoo tool bar and I get this message saying that the yahoo toolbar only
works with Internet explorer and it says that I didn't have it but i do. I
went back to windows update to download the xp dervice pack 2 again thinking
it might help me but now it will not download it and I recieve an error code
just like the one I recieved on the symantic web site except it has a few
more 0's in front of the. i can not remember haow many but I will look when I
get home. I think I have some kind of software that is blocking my internet
explorer but I can not find it. I do not if was something to with the xp
service pack 2 that I downloaded the first time or not. Does anyone know what
I am talking about and if so can you help me? I would really appreciate it.
It will not let me download anything that needs internet explorer because it
says I don't have it but I do. I have reinstalled IE6 but that did not help.
HELP PLEASE!!
Thanks

Hi tommy :)

You may have scumware on your system. Do the following to clean the
scumware your anti-virus can not detect from your system:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

You should also get a copy of WINSOCKXPFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)
or ........
Winsock Fix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

And after removing the spyware by following Jan's instructions,

1. Update Norton.

2. Turn off Norton and reinstall SP2.

3. Reactivate Norton.
