something has changed in xp

bob

I have XP Pro and have had it for well over a year. Within
the last 2 weeks there has been a change made to my set
up. I did not make this change that I know of.
When I go to save an image and either right click or use
the pop up save bar, the name of the image
is "untitled.bmp". It used to save as what ever the name
was and what ever extension it had (jpg, gif). Also, at
the same time, when I use the back button, I get a message
that the page has expired. This rarely happened before and
now does it most of the time.
If possible, could you email me along with posting here?
This is the first time that I have used these newsgroups
and am not positive how I found it.

Thanks in advance.

Sometimes, if you right-click an image in Internet Explorer and choose Save
Picture As, the list of available types in the Save As dialog box will not
contain .jpg, .gif, or .png. It will either contain both .bmp and .art, or only
..bmp. Here are two procedures that may fix this problem.

To empty your Temporary Internet Files cache
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
2. On the General tab, click Delete Files.

To turn off graphic compression in the AOL client
1. Go to Preferences in AOL.
2. Click Internet properties (or WWW in some versions).
3. Click Web Graphics.
4. Clear Never compress graphics (or Use compressed graphics in some versions).

Clear your Temporary Internet Files, then try again. If that doesn't help:
Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg - For Content Type, it should read image/jpeg.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpeg - For content Type, it should read: image/jpeg.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif - For Content Type is should read image/gif.

If it already says that, go to Start, Run and type in: regsvr32.exe /i
shdocvw.dll

This happens when IE's cache gets overfull. So use
Tools|InternetOptions|General, and click the "Delete Files" button.

Not a problem, it happens. We're all only trying to help.
Have a good day.

First thing to do is empty your Temporary Internet Files. Open Internet
Explorer and choose Tools- Internet Options. On the General tab, click the
Delete Files button.

This happens if the indexes of the Temporary Internet Files get
overloaded. In Control Panel - Internet Options, in the temporary
internet files section on the General page, click 'Delete files'. Then
I suggest click Settings and reduce the space allowed - 50 MB is
probably generous, and on big drives it tends to choose by default a
setting that is so high that this overload happens

This is truly 'amazing' I was just about to post exactly the same
question!
In the last few days whenever I click to save an image instead of it
showing in the drop down whether to save as .gif, .jpeg etc etc it
shows 'only' .bmp?

Anyone esle also having this problem?

I will try what the other poster suggested but surely this is amazing
as I guessed it was something on my own PC.

Anyone any ideas how this could suddenly 'pop up' as an XP problem?

Do a search on this group either through your newsreader or Google for "jpg"
or "bmp" and several of the the threads have explanations as to what causes
this.
