I installed Norton AntiVirus and now I can open Attachments in Windows Vista
Mail. Previously, I had to email messages to Yahoo and open attachments that
way as a work around. When I bought Vista Upgrade it came with Norton
AntiVirus but I did not install it because I was trying to solve the Windows
Mail problem first before adding another software. Then I installed it
recently. Why doesn't Microfat come out and inform everyone that this
co-partnership with Norton AntiVirus provide the best solution. They
advertised that Vista was like a replacement to other Virus software and we
might save money not having to buy additional virus protection software. This
is all a scam to sell a new box of software called Vista and in a weak moment
I bought into the scam. They should be charged for this crime of wasting our
time trying to correct their defective software. Why did they create this new
message board to hear about our problems with their software. It is admission
of guilt. We are their slaves and guinea pigs with their new software and
somebody should be fired. They are getting free feedback from us. We should
be compensated for our wasted time in a class action lawsuit for false
advertising that Vista will makes us more productive and is more protective
against virus attacks. Actually, Windows XP with Outlook Express is
sufficient and I would recommend anyone to stay with that system and use
Norton System Works virus software. I should have read CNET's review of
Windows Vista before buying into this software scam. It is working now after
40 hours of wasted time.

Most people find Norton to be a disasyer with Vista and expecially with
Windows Mail.

No matter what I do I can't open or save attachments in Windows Mail. I did
uncheck the box in Security Settings (about not downloading dangerous
attachments). Nothing seems to work.

Click on Tools, then Options, then Read. If there is a check mark in the
box
before Read all messages in plain text, click on this box and then Apply.
Click on OK.

Thankyou Joe, this sorted out a problem for me on My Mum's PC.

Her Norton Antivirus Trial was about to expire, and was popping up annoying
reminders. I installed a good free Antivirus program, and disabled the
Norton/Symantec Services.(approx 7 or 8 in services and startup programs)

Sometime after this, she found she could no longer open Windows Mail
attachments, no matter what settings I tried in the mail options.

After finding this post, I re-enabled the Symantec Services 1 by one, found
3 that were necessary, and amazingly she was then able to open her email
attachments!

Regards,
Jo

Disabling Symantec (Norton) services is not sufficient.
To ensure that Norton won't degrade Windows Mail you must uninstall
anything 'Norton' or 'Symantec'.

Thanks, I will post back any updates if the problem recurs.
The PC and my Mum are about an hour away from where I live, so will be able
to give it some time to see if there are any more problems.

It's not a good idea to have even parts of two antivirus programs installed
at the same time. Norton's uninstall procedure does not clean up very
well, so you often have to run this cleanup procedure:

<http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039>

You may even have to delete the email account under Windows Mail and
then create it again to finish the cleanup.

In the free antivirus program, remember to leave email scanning disabled.
