Some Windows XP Updates Fail

R

Robert Houk

This week I successfully added 11 updates, but four refuse to install, each
having failed in independent attempts. I have two year old DELL Dimension
8300 (Intel, top of line when purchased) with lots of memory, etc.

Failed:
Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 for Windows XP
Security Update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP (KB917734)
Security Update for Windows Media Player Plug-in (KB911564)
Update for WMDRM-enabled Media Players (KB902344)

IE 7.0 has gives a link to suggested fixes.....I've tried all and they don't
work.

Otherwise, I'm up to date on updates......dozens successfully installed.

Suggestions?

Disable your "anti-" software (anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-trojan,
etc.) when you install updates. Don't disable your firewall (unless you
have a router). And don't forget to re-enable your protective software
afterwards.

To install Internet Explorer 7, If you installed IE 7 follow these
directions /exactly/:

http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install.

Rather than installing through Microsoft Update, download the IE 7
installer from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

and install directly from your hard disk.

If Leonard's suggestions don't work.

Select, Start, Help and Support, Keep your Windows up- to-date with
Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed Icon
(if any) in the Status Column. What does it say fo each failed update??

Hope this helps.
