Some sound events don't work

Certain sound events stopped working from a few days ago. Like The sound
associated with Windows Start and Windows Exit, for example..... have
stopped working. But all other sound events work. Even the non-working ones
work all right when tested in Sounds and Multimedia setting. Changing the
sound scheme or changing the associated wav file works within that Control
Panel applet only - not when that event occurs!

I tried setting off all sounds, rebooting, setting a different sound scheme,
rebooting and still some events don't produce the sound! Does not affect any
PC function. Every other audio function - WMP10, DVD players, Adobe
Premiere, Sony Vegas - work perfectly fine. Every audio and other
multimedia device shows as working in Device Manager and all have the latest
drivers installed and intact. There have been no harware/software changes on
this PC that could affect this. Spy/Ad-ware checks turned up nothing. I
would like to know what gives just by way of interest.

TIA.
