Some Sites not opening

Hi

I'm having problem opening site http://symantec.com in IE browser. The page
loaded in the browser is homepage of google.com while the URL in the url bar
is http://symantec.com. The actual problem I'm having is that my norton
antivirus update is not working on this system. It says cannot connect to
the server. The reason I suppose is that somehow the antivirus update client
is also connecting to google.com for updating its definitions as its doing
in browser. I know viruses do such kind of activities, i.e. to block access
to antivirus sites. but I've removed the viruses manually by deleting known
virus exes from system32 folder and their entries from the registry. Also
I've checked the task manager and there are no suspicious processes visible
running that could be virus.

Also I'm not having this problem in other systems on the LAN, so its
definitely not a problem at my service provider's end.

Can someone please tell how to fix this site redirection issue. Is this some
setting in IE or what, as I need to update the virus definitions.

Regards

I've been having a similar problem - particularly with my Symantec Norton
AntiVirus. While trying to get my IE to connect to the DSL modem, I would
notice my Auto AntiVirus would be disabled. I checked the default setting
and that was turned off as well. I would re-enable the default setting but
if I would restart my desktop, the AntiVirus would be disabled again!

I did a System Restore to last Monday before I started getting these odd
symptoms and it cleared up until the next day I tried to connect to the
internet again. Once I FINALLY got connected, I performed the LiveUpdate on
Norton and it took a couple of attempts with downloading all of the updates
before I could get them installed; the internet was VERY slow and would
sometimes time out.

I was okay for the rest of the evening but I can only hope that my AntiVirus
is still enabled and my RoadRunner will connect when I bring up my desktop.

Hi

I figured my problem out. Some virus had made some entries in "host" file
under c:\winnt\system32\etc path. I opened this file and found out that
there were lots of entries in it with most of the popular antivirus site
names being resolved to google server IP's. like

64.233.167.104 www.symantec.com
64.233.167.104 www.sophos.com
64.233.167.104 www.mcafee.com

I removed all these entreis and I got the problem fixed.
Anyway hope things get fixed at your end too.

Usman
