I'VE GOT THE SOLUTION - FROM MICROSOFT!
1. Go to www.microsoft.com
2. In the Search Window (upper right corner), type: windows installer cleanup
3. Click on the first heading, "Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility".
4. Scroll down and click on "Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
package now."
5. Save it to your Desktop or any folder you wish.
6. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
7. A window will pop up. Scroll down to the Windows Defender line.
8. Select or highlight that line (I had two such entries).
9. Click the Remove button. Then click the Exit button.
10. Go to www.microsoft.com and download and install the new Windows
Defender program Version 1.1.1593.0
11. That's it. Happy computing.

Windows Defender no longer supports Windows 2000 as mainstream support ended
in June 2005.

It looks like those of us running Win2K can forget windows defender.

Ah well...I wasn't all that impressed with it anyway.

And since that is the version that I have, and since there are still no
user-configurable options within that version to let the user decide how
and when to perform updates and for what TYPE of update for JUST Windows
Defender, how does that solve your unspecified "update problem"?

I tried the solution from Vanguard to get rid of Windows Defender which was
giving me the 0x800106ba problem on my Win XP Home.
Unfortunately, step 7 failed. There was no popup window.
I ran it again, but there was still no popup window.

So now I'm wondering what did I just do?
What's not going to work now?
Could someone out there sytraightem me out.

During installation of the cleanup tool, it showed some "Office Update"
Logos. So isn't it identical to the Office Update you mentioned?

How is the Office Update, that you mean, started?

I've uninstalled the Beta 2 from Add/Remove programs and with this. Beta 2
doesn't show up on either of the lists anymore, but it still tries to run
when I reboot the PC. The shortcuts are still there as well.

Thank you Ken,

Unfortunately, when I reach point 6 and I run the Windows installer cleanup
utility, I get the message "Internal error 2755. 1632
c\programfiles\MSecache\wicu3\msicuu.msi" then "fatal error" and nothing more
happens.

So I still have the message "windows defender : application failed to
initialize 0x800106ba. A problem caused windows defender service to stop..."
when starting my computer;
Do someone have another solution (I also tried du unistall or to update
windiws defender, but with no success)

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best Regards

I tried twice (with or without antivirus). Each time I reach point 6, I get
an error message which stops the installation of "Windows installer Cleanup
Utility" before completed. So I cannot reach point 7 and get rid of my
problem!
Any Idea to eliminate Windows Defender from my computer (and the message
"windows defender : application failed to initialize 0X800106ba..." each time
I start my computer)

Thank you in advance for your help
