SOHO Network problem

Hi.

I have a network setup problem that, for the moment, has me beaten. The
setup problem came up while I was studying for my N+ course, last week. I
am new to networking so my knowledge is limited for the moment.

Here is a description of the network.

Machine 1 contains 2 NICs.
NIC1 connects to the internet.
NIC2 connects to an 8 port switch.
Machine 1 runs a proxy that defines 192.168.0.73/3128 as the default
gateway.

8 other machines (each containing 1 NIC) connect to the switch via standard
patch cables.
Each machine has a static IP address defined as 192.168.0.11 - 192.168.0.18
and share resources / internet.

How do I add another machine to the network?

I have a network card in the machine that I want to add plus a spare network
card. I also have a crossover cable. I can only install the spare network
card in one of the 8 machines connected to the switch.

How do I add the new machine to the network?

Thanks in advance for any help or information offered.

Ray.

you could buy another HUB/Switch and connect it into one of the 8 origional
ports and connect the remaining two computers into the new HUB/Switch.....

Sadly I don't have that option for this question. I suggested adding
another switch as my first answer but was told that there is a solution
available without adding another switch. I simply cannot see the solution
though.

Off-topic question :-
Are you using broadband?
If yes, any particular reason you don't want to use router?

Nothing to see. Install the spare NIC in any of the eight machines (as you
stated) and connect additional machine via cross over cable.

Ho would I configure the new NIC?

Would I just assign a static address via TCP/IP settings?, say 192.168.0.21
in the machine that's cannected to the switch and 192.168.0.22 in the new
machine. And then set the default gateway in the new machine to
192.168.0.73?

Many thanks again.

No. You need to bridge the 2 network cards in the machine that connects to
the switch so that the 2 segments (original network/new machine) are on the
same logical network.

Thanks for that info. Is it possible to bridge the connections using
Windows 2000? It's easy enough in XP but I can't find the option to bridge
connections using Windows 2000.

Many thanks.

The question was set as a practical piece by a tutor teaching the N+ course.
The only equipment that I'm allowed to use is a Nic and a crossover cable.
I am only a few weeks into the course so most of the more complicated stuff
is beyond me. All that I have covered at the moment is the basics such as
topology, media, cables, OSI 7 layer model, and basic protocols (TCP/IP,
smtp, pop, snmp, slip, ppp, pppoe etc). I suspect that this question was
designed to test what we've learned and that a simple solution is available.

Thanks.
