Is there any software out there that will convert my camcorder miniDV
clips that were saved on HD as .avi files to mpeg4 files quickly so I
can burn them to DVD? I have Ulead7, Nero Ultra7, and it takes forever
to convert them.

This very nice guide on converting DV to DVD may help:

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dv/guide.html

It uses a basic set of freeware tools [AviSynth
BeSweet & GUI] and your DVD authoring app [Nero, Ulead, etc]. In
*addition*, it seems to need ~one~ of these SW tools: either
CinemaCraft Encoder (CCE), TMPGEnc, Canopus Procoder or MainConcept
MPEG Encoder.

NOTE: TMPGEnc is time-limited shareware, but after time is up, you've
got a freeware MPEG-1 only tool.

Otherwise, I'd recommend checking out www.videohelp.com
Lots of expert advice, excellent tutorials, and links to all
above-mentioned tools.

Also: afterdawn.com is a good site to check out for tools 7 advice.

Avi2Dvd
http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html

Avi2Dvd is an All In One tool in order to convert with just few
clicks Avi/Ogm/Mkv/Wmv/Dvd files to Dvd/Svcd/Vcd.
Supports multiple audiostreams and up to three subtitles.
From the version 0.3.4 and later can support DV-AVI videos,
so it can handle captured avi's from digital videocameras.
Avi2dvd can also produce semi professional dvd menus with
chapter/audio/subtitles buttons with extreme facility !
This utility is 100% freeware and uses only freeware software.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I have hours of miniDV of my twin
granddaughters from the time they were 20 minutes old up to their now 17
months. ;-)) I wanted to burn the DVDs for Xmas for my daughter and
their other grandparents and great-grandparents. ;-))

I actually am a real novice at this, but it says on my MadDog 7/1 dual
layer DVD burner that it should be mPeg4. I'll check out the website
you sent though because I really need all the help I can get.

Thanks

"total video converter<snip url> is the software you
wanted."
$45.95 shareware does not = freeware.
