im reformatting a system for an elderly friend that recently got a virus via
email. shes running xp pro on a 300mhz p2 class machine with 128 megs of
ram. i normally use nortons antivirus but im sure nortons would kill an
older machine like this. im looking for a recommendation for an antivirus
package that wont consume the limited resources in this system.
thanks,

thanks,

Give F-Prot for Windows <http://www.f-prot.com> or Nod32
<http://www.nod32.com> a try. Either of them should do quite nicely.

As an aside you really should consider adding [at least] another 128MB
of RAM to that machine... 128MB is kind of marginal.

I would recommend 'Virus Chaser' or 'Dr. Web'. VC is the lightest (and
still very effective) antivirus application I've ever tested. Nod32 is
also quite light but I am not sure if it is as effective as VC. If you
want a freeware program I would suggest 'AVG' or 'AntiVir PE'. AntiVir
uses a bit more recources than AVG but it is a somewhat more effective
too.

thanks for the recommendations. instead ive talked her into letting me put
98SE on the machine which makes it really scream. now she can run nortons
without any major impact on the system resources.
