Software for DVD burners: Retail vs. OEM

Matt

Looking at the most popular DVD burners at newegg
(http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1) I see
that the NECs and Sonys are mostly sold OEM, and the retail-boxed drives
cost a lot more. And using pricegrabber, I can't find the NEC ND-3500a
with Nero or Roxio. Where do people buy retail-boxed drives at prices
near the OEM prices, say within $10 of OEM. When people buy the OEM
drives, what do they use for software?

I have a copy of the full version of Nero. So if I buy a new drive, I
already have software for it. Sometimes (I'm not sure if Nero does it) you
can upgrade the OEM version to the full version for less-than-full retail
price. And you get a few more features too. But if you don't have any
software you might want to buy the retail version. ymmv.

Matt,

About a year ago I bought an OEM DVD drive from Newegg and it came with
PowerDVD version 4.0. However, I think version 5 may have already been out.
I was not expecting any software since I was under the impression that OEM
hardware came without software.

What I did not get was any mounting material, an IDE cable or an audio cable
which usually are included in a retail box.

There are many "freeware" dvd burning programs. I recently
got a nec oem drive from newegg and use freeware dvd burning
software unders windows from www.webattack.com (other good freeware there also).
When in linux it already has dvd burning software (K3B).
Hope this helps. PS my 2500A drive for US $61.00 works great.
