so many choices for a 9600XT board

T

Tony!

I've been looking at 9600XT cards trying to make up my mind which to
get.

At the top of my list is tha Asus 9600XT w/128M

The Vivo thingy sounds cool..
But I really don't know much about it.. Is this feature to let me
record video from things like output from a vcr?
If so, does it have an application to do this that will synch audio
with the video?

It seems to come with a nice software package and converters to let me
use two vga monitors or a composite out to my tv..

BUT..

the Saphire 9600XT 256M board seems to be a bit cheaper than the asus
but has no vivo feature and I don't really know much about it except
that it sapphire seems to be very liked by reviewers and comments here
said it was much quieter than the asus.

Another on my list is the All In Wonder 9600XT card which seems to be
tweaked a bit faster than the normal 9600XT, and has the tv tuner
card.. (This one I so far only found on ati's comparison pages.. can't
find a site selling this card to get a price on it..)

Being both broke and very happy with my current nvidia geforce2 mx
card (until games are now coming out that 'require' T&L on the card to
even install), I haven't seriously looked into a new card for a long
time..

The choices are dizzying...

I don't want to start any mini-wars, but would anyone be able to share
experiances with any of the above cards, or offer advice of one over
the other??

Thanks :)

I've been using the ASUS 9600XT for a couple of weeks now. Not long enough
to make me an expert but it does seem to be a very well-done product. Yes,
the VIVO dongle has four connectors on it -- an RCA and an S-video for input
and the same for output. Audio capture goes through the system's audio card
line input. The software comes with a "VCR" application for capturing video
but the hardware is fully compatible with Windoze standards and should work
with any sort of capture setup you want to use. I've been using Nero-6 to
start copying old VHS tapes to DVD. Still feeling my way along and trying to
figure out the peculiarities of the Nero software but the audio/video
capture works flawlessly.

Stay away from Sapphire if you want to overclock. they haven't built
all their cards to exploit this, i know i got caught. they have failed
to build-in the temperature sensing on every board so you cannot
exploit the Overdrive feature as ATI intended.
Needless to say this will be the last Sapphire purchase that i will
make.....

stick with abit/asus

cheers

Beware that PowerColor ones don't have overdrive. Yes. No Overdrive.

Not sure about the others. I have a Gigabyte one and I need to flash the
bios to turn the overdrive on.
