Smart Card Service

M

Mike K.

Hello,

I am trying to start the smart card service on a windows XP professional
machine, but I am getting the following error: Cannot start service, Access
denied.
I am logged on as the local Administrator, and the logon account for the
service is the NT Authority \ Local Service Account.
The only dependency for the service is on the Plug and Play service which is
already started.
What could be the reason for the failure of this service to start?

Best Regards
Mike

Do you have your smartcard reader installed and the correct drivers in use ?

Hi Mike
The smart card reader (Schlumberger) is installed with the correct
drivers.
I tried installing the reader on another machine (same brand, same
specs, same OS: XP Professional) and the smart card service was started
successfuly.
Could the smart card service be corrupted on the first machine, and how
can it be repaired
Regards
Mike

Mike,

If the service is corrupt (or the required DLLs etc) then the best way to
fix this would be to perform a repair install of Windows XP.
This is an option after booting from the CD ROM.
It should not remove any data or applications - but just put back and/or
replace and damaged files.
As ever always ensure you have a good backup of the PC prior to performing
such a process.
