Smart card service won't start (win2k upgraded to XP Pro)

I just upgraded Win2k to XP Pro. Immediately thereafter I installed a USB smart card reader. The driver loads fine and is the latest version. However the Smart Card Service itself won't load: error 5 "Access denied.

I've tried manually starting but I get the same error. Looking in the system event log I see

Event ID 104: Comm Responder could not access the Calais key: Access is denied
Event ID 110: Comm Responder could not create communications objec
Event ID 201: Failed to initialize Server Application: Access is denied

followed by "Smart card service was sent a start control, "Smart card service entered the stopped state," and "Smart card service terminated with error 'Access is denied.'

The service is correctly configured, runs as LocalService, and the .exe does not appear to be corrupted

Ideas?

I finally got it to work. I uninstalled and reinstalled the service
and it then worked fine:

From a command prompt, type:

"scardsvr uninstall" then "scardsvr install"
