Win xp home edition takes over 2 minutes to shut down.

Start up takes only 10-15 seconds.

How can I speed up xp shutdown?

Thanks

Here is your first plan of attack: Start > Help and Support > Fixing a
problem (left column) > Troubleshooting problems (left column) > List of
troubleshooters (right column). Note: You may need to scroll to find some of
these.

Tom, I find Help and Support in left column, but can not
find... Fixing a problem (left column) > Troubleshooting
problems (left column) > List of troubleshooters (right column)

Thanks

Hi, bent.

Try this site, by MVP Jim Eshelman:
WINDOWS XP
SHUTDOWN & RESTART
TROUBLESHOOTING
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php

One part of the puzzle could be HOW you are preparing for the shutdown. If
you don't "put away your toys" and close all your running programs, then
WinXP must do that for you before it shuts down. What do you have still
running at the time you hit Start | Turn off computer | Turn off?

Hi,

I have tried shutting down with everything I was using
still active, to going to Ctrl-Alt-Del and closing out
everything. That does not seem to affect the amount of
time it takes to close down. Shut down time takes from 1
min, 55 seconds to 2 minutes 25 seconds. Boot never takes
over 15 to 20 seconds max.

Usually shut down by... WinKey, U, U.

WinKey, U, R, takes as long to shut down, but restarts
fast after it shuts down.

Tried START, Turn Off Computer. Either way, same slow
shutdown.

Thanks

Hi, bent.

While Ctrl+Alt+Del can be used to End Task, it's not the recommended
procedure and should not be used routinely. Use this only as a nearly-last
resort when the program is "not responding" or otherwise out of control.
Normally, go into the program and end it as it was designed to be ended.
Unless another method is provided, click File | Close (or Exit), or
right-click on its minimized logo in the Taskbar and click Close.

When you choose End Task or End Process from the Task Manager, it warns you
that this could cause problems, so don't use that method unless the normal
ways don't work. Even then, close all the programs you can before using
this sledgehammer to kill the uncooperating one.

When you end the programs as they were designed to be ended, each of them
closes all the files that it had open; some of them write entries into logs;
some save updated settings, etc. When you Ctrl+Alt+Del and End Task, they
don't get a chance to do these things. Even when all the programs are
properly closed, WinXP still has some housekeeping of its own to do before
shutting down.

Have you visited Jim Eshelman's site that I gave you the link for?

Thanks R.C.

I did check the site mentioned. Tried sevral of the things
mentioned. When I Disabled the EVENT LOG, it took 3
minutes to start up the computer. Put that back on Automatic.

Haven't tried everything suggested yet, had to get off the
computer most of the weekend.

Wondering about the patch for HANGUP AT SHUTDOWN??? The
patch came out before SP1, (I think) My version of Win XP
home edition, had SP1 on the disk. So should I try to
download the Hangup patch and install it? The way I read
the info about the patch is that the computer actually
hangs up and does nothing. Mine shuts down at around 2
minutes consistantly. So is that patch needed?

Really appreciate all the help.
