Hi, bent.
While Ctrl+Alt+Del can be used to End Task, it's not the recommended
procedure and should not be used routinely. Use this only as a nearly-last
resort when the program is "not responding" or otherwise out of control.
Normally, go into the program and end it as it was designed to be ended.
Unless another method is provided, click File | Close (or Exit), or
right-click on its minimized logo in the Taskbar and click Close.
When you choose End Task or End Process from the Task Manager, it warns you
that this could cause problems, so don't use that method unless the normal
ways don't work. Even then, close all the programs you can before using
this sledgehammer to kill the uncooperating one.
When you end the programs as they were designed to be ended, each of them
closes all the files that it had open; some of them write entries into logs;
some save updated settings, etc. When you Ctrl+Alt+Del and End Task, they
don't get a chance to do these things. Even when all the programs are
properly closed, WinXP still has some housekeeping of its own to do before
shutting down.
Have you visited Jim Eshelman's site that I gave you the link for?
