Slow Windows Shutdown Caused By Defender?

With Windows Defender installed, the "Saving your settings" phase of Windows
shutdown on my computer consistently takes several minutes. With Defender
uninstalled, it consistently only takes a few seconds. That's with Windows XP
Home Ed SP2 fully up-to-date with patches. Can anyone advise a possible
solution please?
