Slow start, system restore

I purchased dell dimension 1100 two months ago and installed some games as
well as some free online programs such as fresh download. system now takes
at least 4 times longer to start completely although most of programs are not
in start up. Antispyware (I have Microsoft, ewido and ashampoo)also detected
some infections which were deleted as recomnended by antispyware. I intend to
go to system restore and restore the system to earliest point. will this
clear all infections if still present and will my all files created after
will also be deleted? thanks a lot for the help and advice.

Hi no name

Doing a system restore wont make your computer faster and it certainly will
not get rid of any virus or spyware of any kind.

System restore shouldnt be used as a fix it....

Are you sure that in your start up you dont have programs running that your
not sure of.

click on start
click on run

type in msconfig

click on the start up tab and see what starts up when you boot up. If things
are ticked that you dont want to have ticked, untick them as a lot of
programs have updates and stuff that start up without your knowledge and do
not show in the start up folder elsewhere on your computer

give this a try
good luck

What anti-virus programme?

However, it may pay to look at the basics!

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit
Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard drive and how much free space?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

Another avenue of enquiry is the Event Viewer System log.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

I would suggest you try cCleaner.
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. I invariably
recommend creating a restore point before using cCleaner.
cCleaner also offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking before
Autocomplete Form History under Internet Explorer.
You do get a warning but this one has irritating consequences.

My computer's specifications
McAfee antivirus, 2.53GHz Processor 256 MB RAM 80 GB Hard disc, free
space 61GB

By running msconfig few items under following 2 headings
C/windows/system32 , C/program/McAfee
can be seen in start up, is it safe to uncheck them?
by the way I also have winpatrol which also tells what programs are running.

Next time choose NOT to install any extras. They often come with spyware
that runs 24/7.

Part of your problem may be insufficient RAM memory so that your
system uses the pagefile which is slower. McAfee may also be part
of the problem.

You may check on pagefile (virtual memory) usage with
Page File Monitor for XP:
http://www.dougknox.com/

Make sure you study the readme.txt file carefully to ensure
you get the utility to work as it should.

This utility demonstrates the overall amount of the pagefile
in use. It does not say which application is using it.

You should expect a certain amount of pagefile usage as regardless
of RAM memory all system tend to use 30 mb.
