Slow Spooling

I'm running Windows XP and printing on an HP LaserJet
4000T. The problem is that when I am printing large
documents (20+ pages) from WordPerfect 10 the spooling is
running very very slowly - about 4 pages ahead of the
actually printed page. In the meantime, I cannot use
WordPerfect until the document has finished printing.

If the configuration of the queue in print / properties / advanced is set to
Print directly to the device, the spooler is not used and one cannot use the
application until the print job has completed.
