Slow printer?

For years I had been using an HP computer that was running at 450 MhZ, with
only 128 Megs of RAM. The printer I had hooked up to it is an HP Deskjet
722C. I recently bought a new Dell Dimension 3000 that is running at 2.8 Mhz
with 1 Gig of RAM. I am still using the old HP printer. Everything is
working fine, excpet that the printer is so SLOW now. I can't understand it.
I have a much faster computer with tons of RAM and now the printer just
creeps along, takes forever to print a page that used to take only 10
seconds. What's going on?
Thanks,
Michael

How is the connection to printer? LPT1 using old computer, USB using
new computer? If so then LPT1 port and USB2 port operate at differing
speeds. I can't tell you which is faster as it is very early on cold
Friday morning in Central London (UK). I am just about to go out for a
quick jog to Regents park when it opens at 05:00 hrs GMT.

The printer is hooked up using a parralell cable just like it was with the
older computer.

The layout of the options differs a lot so I can't tell you exactly where to
look but in your printer settings see what the various "Resolution" options
are. Some suggest abilities to print astronomical resolutions and sure they
can accept those from the PC and convert down, but anything above 300 DPI is
generally indistinguishable. If there is a draft mode see if that is set,
maybe it was before but the new default is quality.

If the Dell is set to send data at very high res maybe the printer is doing
a lot more calculating.

I hasten to add that I am just guessing here,

excuse a newbie butting in here - are you aware that there are no winXP
drivers for the HP 700 series? I am assuming that your new computer
runs XP.
Consequently, your printer is doing the best it can with a Windows
generic printer driver, which has only basic functionality.
I was running a DJ 720C with my present machine (XP Home), and just
put up with the lack of speed and of finer functions until buying a new
printer recently. I now have printed pages coming at me like machine
gun rounds !
Given that new printers cost about the same as a couple of ink
cartridges, perhaps now is the time to upgrade?
Regards, and hello to all here.
