printer scanner ?

Does anyone know if a HP Deskjet 722C Printer & a HP Scanjet 4200C Scanner
will work ok with Windows XP or will I have to purchase another scanner &
printer for Windows XP? I used them on another computer with Windows 98.
Thanks,
Marsha

Not sure - check with HP support on that. Their website should mention what
OSes are supported.

A quick trip to hp's website would have showed you that there are indeed
drivers for both of these products to use on xp. Whether they work or not
depends on your system, but they should work fine.

XP has a driver for the 722c built in. Go to HP's web site and look yourself for your scanner.

I will go check the site. I do not comprehend what drivers etc. are. I am
going to learn tho! I am glad I will not have to buy another scanner or
printer. Thanks

Drivers are "programs" that make the scanner and printer work under windows
xp. Without drivers, the hardware will not function. There are usually
drivers specific for each version of windows. In hp's software and drivers
download section you should be able to search for your products and download
and install the drivers to make them work on xp.

If they are both LPT (Parallel) devices no... you can use one or the other,
NOT both. XP does not support piggy backing.

If one can use a USB connection, that's fine.

Drivers for the 722C are included in XP - they do not have all the bells
and whistles of extras that you may have had, but they print fine. The
4200 C has drivers available from HP - go to

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

Type in Scanjet 4200C and search, choose Windows XP as system, and that
will lead you to the page describing the downloads,

Let me try to explain. The way an operating system need to
communicate with a particular piece of hardware (say a printer)
varies depending on the hardware. Since there are many printers,
if Windows included the varied instructions for all those
printers, it would be much bigger. Even worse, if a new printer
came out, Windows wouldn't know how to communicate with it, and
the printer wouldn't be usable.

So what happens is that all of that program code to communicate
with printers is missing from Windows. There are a series of
small programs available, one for each kind of printer, and you
install only the one(s) you need for your printer(s). These small
programs are called printer drivers. If a printer manufacturer
releases a new printer, he releases a driver for each of the
operating systems he wants his printer to be supported under.

My example above is about printers, but the same thing is true
for each of the kinds of hardware that Windows has to communicate
with.
