Slow opening of folders (again)

I know this is a regular question and that there could be many
contributions to slow performance. But I've done all the 'obvious'
things like regular clean-ups, daily defragging, chkdsk /f, sfc
/scannow, and yet sometimes on clicking the 'Up' tool icon in a My
Computer folder it can take 30 seconds to display the contents. Really
getting irritating. Are there any other things I should try please?

It's possible that there are some networked volumes that your computer
thinks should be there and you're waiting for network timeouts.
Disconnect your network connection and see if the delay goes away.

Thanks John, I'll pursue that.

Any other possible causes?

FWIW, I captured a few seconds of the PC activity with Filemon. In the
hope that it might offer someone here a clue about the cause, here are
a few of the thousands of similar entries while opening a folder, with
nothing yet displayed:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcss.dll SUCCESS Options: Open Access:
Execute
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rpcss.dll SUCCESS

C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Policies\x86_Policy.6.0.Microsoft.Windows.Common-Cont
NOT FOUND Options: Open Directory

C:\WINDOWS\Assembly\GAC\Policy.6.0.Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls\
NOT FOUND Options: Open Directory

C:\WINDOWS\System32\en-US NOT FOUND Attributes: Error

C:\WINDOWS\System32\en NOT FOUND Attributes: Error

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ SUCCESS Attributes: D

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ SUCCESS Attributes: D

C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Manifests\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls_6595b
NOT FOUND Attributes: Error

C:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC\Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls\6.0.0.0_en-US
PATH NOT. Attributes: Error

C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Policies\x86_Policy.6.0.Microsoft.Windows.Common-Cont
NOT FOUND Options: Open Directory

Do these offer any insight into the cause of the long delays I'm
getting please?
