Some programs are slow to start

all of a sudden as in within today and possibly yesterday I notice that
when I click on some folders that contain say my anti- spyware programs
etc, and a few things on the toolbar, it's taking my programs about 15
seconds to load up when it was about 3 seconds to load up. I thought
perhaps something else was running and there are just a load on the
system. i have 1 g of ram.... windows xp sp2. I run my antivirus and
other stuff on a constant almost daily basis. Right now my system seems
to be clean, I checked in safe mode and ran them. Seems the icon loads
were slow in safe mode as well, but then I think they just do that.

Any ideas why this is happening. Did something in my registry get
changed. Could a service be changed to make things slow. Or how about
zone alarm and if so, what would I look for if it's deciding which
program is okay to load.

Thanks.

Maybe a Scandisk and Defrag is in order?? To get a real good picture of
what is happening, download Process Explorer, free, from
www.sysinternals.com . It will tell you everything that is running in real
time, shows a graphical representation as well as a tree, and the cpu usage
in % by each app/process, including background processes.

Defrag running all the time??? Do you have Diskeeper or some
equivalent?.....or have Defrag sheduled? I still think your best bet would
be to utilize Process Explorer so you can "see" exactly what your cpu is
doing at any given point, especially when you are experiencing the slow
downs. Let us know.

well the slow downs were only accessing any program to get started, once
started they worked fine. doesn't matter now. I did a restore and have
a new computer again, of course had to remove half the crap that Dell
sticks on here that I don't like or use like McAfee so I can get my
norton to work and that also meant going into the registry to remove all
traces of McAfee . Whew what a process, 2 days of putting things back,
two hours to get windows updates, (wish they would release disks every so
ofter for us modem people), at least my -restore system had sp2 on it
already............. and I would still be adding programs but found there
were many things last time on here that i didn't use, so I just didn't
put them back on. So right now I am lean and working good. :)
