Slow network access from WIN2000Pro

J

JM7

I have a network where I have just introduced an SBS 2003 server. I have
also made TCP/IP the main network protocol.
Since all this has happened, file sharing traffic across the network
especially to my WIN2K box has been slow.

Initially I thought this was due to problems with SMB signing on the SBS
2003 but even after disabling this - it is slow.

The network card reports 100Mbps connection. But opening word files across
the network is noticeably slow.

Thanks in advance

How's your DNS? Is DNS running on the SBS2K3 Server? Are the clients set
to look at that DNS for name resolution?

Can you define more clearly the "slowness" you're seeing? Are file
moves/copies slow? Or is it just opening files?

J

JM7

Opening files is slow. also with MSACCESS with the front end on the WIN2K
and the back end on SBS 2003 - the app runs very slow, because it takes a
long time to retrieve the data from the SBS PC.

I have the same app running on a WIN 98 PC it retrieves the data from the
SBS MDB very fast.

So it is only affecting the WIN 2k BOX

The SBS address is 192.168.0.250
the DLINK router is 192.168.0.1
The WIN 2K is 192.168.0.4

Can you clarify what settings should be used with DNS to get the best
performance

The router is connected to a cable modem

thanks in advance

How are your PCs getting their IP addresses? Are you running DHCP and DNS
on the server, or is the router giving out IP addresses?

Thanks for your help Richard,

But I don;t think I understand what you mean by host entries for computers
on entwork.

Also I find it strange that the WIN 98 PC has fast access/file sharing from
the SERVER but the WIN 2K has slow access.

So it is either a problem on the win2k box or what you have mentioned is
only peculiar for WIN 2k - seems strange

The reason I'm looking at DNS being your problem is thus - Windows 98
clients use NetBIOS name resolution to resolve names, thus they don't care
if DNS is working correctly or not. In a Windows 2000/Active Directory
environment good DNS is a must as your clients will prefer to use this to
resolve names then fall back to WINS or NetBIOS if necessary.

You never did tell me if copying files (as opposed to opening them) is fast,
in the absence of that bit of data I'm working the problem from the DNS end.
To check DNS, on your SBS2003 server open the Administrative Tools, then the
DNS management tool. In theory, if all is configured correctly, you should
see a Forward Lookup Zone containing your domain and all the Windows 2000
and above clients.

Richard,

File copying from SBS 2003 to WIN2kPro is also slow - not just file opening.

I looked at DNS on the SBS Admin tools. There is no sign of the WIN 2K
machine there. Instead lots of entries _sites , _tcp ....

I hope this is getting us close.

Let's try this - add a host entry in the Forward Lookup Zone for the Windows
2000 Professional client, and (if one is not present already) for the
SBS2003 server. Make sure the Windows 2000 client is showing the IP address
of the SBS2003 server as its primary DNS address. Then see what happens to
your access times.

J

JM7

there are 3 sub headings in DNS
braces.local
(same as parent) Host(A) 192.168.0.250
office Host(A) 192.168.0.4 just added

domain.dnszones
(same as parent) Host(A) 192.168.0.250

forest.dnszones
(same as parent) Host(A) 192.168.0.250

should I replace (same as parent) with the name of the SBS 2003 PC name?
should I add the office name and IP address in the domain and forest
dnszones?
Make sure the Windows 2000 client is showing the IP address of the
SBS2003 server as its primary DNS address.
do you mean on the WIN2000 machine - chaange the Preferred DNS address to
192.168.0.250?

J

JM7

I carried those changes in the forward lookup zone but access times are
still the same.

Could it be just a Network card problem? although I can transfer files very
quickly TO SBS 2003 it is just on the receiving end that is the problem.

R

Richard G. Harper

Well ... if it isn't DNS then you need to take a look at hardware problems.
I'd try substituting a different NIC, checking cabling, making sure both
ends of the connection are set for the same speed and duplex ...
