Slow copying data temp file

I recently began having issues while backing up some files to a CD. Used to
take 10-15 minutes to copy and 5 minutes to write. It now takes 1 - 2 hours
to copy, and 5 minutes to write.
I am able to copy these files to a CD on a CD drive on another computer on
our small network in 20 minutes.
There were no changes to my system that I can find. It just started taking
longer one day. I do these backups every day.
I have tried everything I can to get it back to the old time. Clean-up,
de-frag, disk check, mem check, driver updates. No luck!
It appears to be a Windows Explorer problem.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

What kind of connection does the drive use? Is it IDE, UDMA, SATA, PATA or
SCSI or something else? I don't know if I can help but I suspect that the
answer might depend on the type of connection.
