Hi there,
1st thoughts would be to download the full version of DirectX 9.0b and
Windows Media Player 9 (Full version not the upgrade). Then re-boot your
machine and install DirectX, reboot again and install Media Player 9...and
reboot again. Without going into exactly why, rebooting causes XP to
re-evaluate itself (for want of a better way of describing it) and thereby
ensuring that it really is using what you want it to.
If this does not help please ask again. There are other issues that a
clean install of XP can create, but if they had occurred I would have
expected you to mention certain other issues which you have not.
