Slow booting windows

Donald

three months ago out of the clear blue I rebooted windows
xp and it took 9 minutes to reboot. after welcome screen
still takes 3 minutes to load personal preferences. I
replaced the processor, motherboard and memory with no
help. I reloaded windows first of course. Scanned for
viruses and came up clean. Tried to repair windows--No
help. Finally I reformated the hard drive and reloaded
everything and it solved my problem. Today It did it
again. Can anyone tell me what's going on and how to fix
the problem without reloading everything. Restoring the
computer to an earlier date did not help either. Both
times I had the problem I had just scanned for spy
software using ad-aware 6.

Hi Donald,

Hit F8 before you get to the Windows XP splash screen and select Safe Mode.
Does it take shorter time to boot? If safe mode is faster try using
MSConfig (Start, Run, and type msconfig in the dialog box.) This tool will
allow you to disable startup items and settings in the System and Win.ini
files. It will also allow you to hide the Microsoft services and disable
third party services. If that allows you to boot faster then start adding
back items until the machine boots slowly. Once you identify the culprit
you can try uninstalling the program associated with the item and see if
the machine boots faster.
