Man-wai Chang ToDie (33.6k)

OS: 64-bit Vi$ta
Game: Need For Speed - Most Wanted (32-bit)

With a GeForce 8600GT, driver 175,14, the game runs smoothly, as in
32-bit WinXP.

With Radeon 4850 and current hotfix driver 64906, the game stutters when
it tries to load the next section of the map.

Could someone explain this?

It seems that it's caused by VMWare Player... removing it seems to fix
this.... not too sure. :)

I think it's really VMWare Player. I installed it when I was still using
that 8600GT. I didn't re-install it after upgrading to Radeon 4850.

Then don't load it while playing games. Never used it so not sure where it
runs from but you can easily stop apps from loading temporarily with a .bat
file and when you reboot the PC they will start up again. Here's an example
of what you need to put in the bat file. net stop is for services and
process -k is for stuff that starts up from the registry run locations.

net stop "Alerter" /Y

process -k QuickTimePlayer.exe

Thanks for the tip. I usually go directly to the registry (HKLM/Local
Machine/Software/WOW64.../Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run...).

I should have tried to reproduce the scenario (plug in the 8600GT again,
install VMWare Player, unplug 8600GT, install 4850, ...), but it's not
mission-critical. So I let it be... :)
