Slow access to network Drive

I am on Windows 2000 server, service pack 3. All client
are xp. When ever I try to accesss the mapped network
drive the first time it is very slow. I can not figure out
why

Was it ever faster? It could be the network
infastructure. Is the network switched or connected with
hubs? How high is the CPU running and how much memory is
being consumed on the file server? You have to try to
determine where the bottle neck is.
