Sign in failed: automation server can't create object

First,to the best of my knowledge, Outlook Express 6 is working fine. That being said, when I attempt to request remote assistance via email I see a warning that

Outlook Express is not set up

and nothing at all happens when I click on

Set up Outlook Express ...

When I attempt to request Remote Assistance via Windows Messenger, the following error message is displayed
Sign in failed: automation server can't create object

This is my "old" p3 550MHz PC, formerly Windows 98, but now upgraded to Windows XP Pro. Probably I need to remove and reinstall Windows Messenger so that the friend who now owns this PC can sign on with his Messenger ID rather that mine. But that's the subject of another post.

Yes, both MS Office and Outlook are installed. However, my friend is a consultant who wears several hats, depending on who is working for, so he needs the concept of Identities offered by Outlook Express for all his email. Sadly, Outlook does not have this "identity" concept implemented.

The complete install of MS Office usually makes MS Outlook the default Mail
Client, whether you want it or not. You will have to make OE the default
Mail Client:

1. http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx; then...

2. http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx

If still no joy, see:
