shuts down when restarted

I have an Athlon XP 2400+ on an ASUS A7S333 motherboard.

My problem is that whenever I try to restart my computer
it shuts down, be it from DOS (CTRL + ALT + DEL), from
Linux, from Windows XP or from the reset button.

Only occasionally does it restart as it is supposed to
and sometimes when I turn it back on - after it shuts
down when I issue a restart command - it boots directly
into the BIOS accusing a processor configuration problem.

Apart from that it works normally i.e. once I boot into
any OS it functions perfectly well for periods long or
short.

I have already tried the following:

* to replace my 400 Watts power supply for a brand new
500 Watts power supply (fearing that my old one might be
defective or too weak to supply all of my hardware);

* to recheck all motherboard jumper configurations and
BIOS settings (again fearing that certain functions such
as "power up by keyboard" might demand too much from my
power supply or that some BIOS settings might be wrong
for my hardware);

* to update my motherboard to its latest BIOS and my
hardware to its latest drivers/firmware;

* to increase ventilation and better the air circulation
inside the computer by adding a chassis fan (fearing that
something might be overheating, even though I always
monitor the CPU and motherboard temperatures and they are
and were always far below the overheating limit).

None of these has solved my problem so I would appreciate
any help from anyone out there.

Thank you,
idamien

Sounds like you cover mostly everything. Did you check the wiring to the
Motherboard. ie: on/off switch, restart etc.
