Shutdown not 100% complete

Hi PC Enthusiasts,
To put a shutdown icon on your desktop, right-click on your desktop and choose New, Shortcut. In the command line type c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0

Click Next and then click Finish. You can now double-click this icon to shut down your computer, without going to the Start menu.

The above trick works for WinXP BUT could I have more shutdown power?
I want the machine will completely shut itself for me --- no need to press the power switch.
This happened to my machine: After clicking Shutdown Icon, Windows XP logo appear and it says "It is now safe to turn off your Computer". Why the computer stop half way?Why give back command order to human master? Will it be possible to grand my special request?

Regards,

Rino

Hi Michael,
Thank You for your fast response. I wrote my answers inside < >
1. If your system uses Advanced Power Management, this problem is usually caused by APM systems on which WinXP is installed because APM (Advanced Power Management) is not enabled by default in WinXP. < I agreed >

2. Right click a blank space on your desktop, select properties, go to the Screen Saver tab and click the Power button under Monitor power. Go to theAPM tab and select "Enable Advanced Power Management support." < I got no Monitor power, I've to stop here >

3. If you see no such tab, go to Start and right click My Computer, select Properties, go to the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button under Device Manager.
< My PC is Sony RX-450 running Win XP, if I use Start menu to shut down, it complied 100% and without human intervention. >

4. In device manager, select the View menu, and turn on show hidden devices. In the device manager window, you will now see an entry for NT APM/Legacy Support (If you see no such entry, skip to the bottom of this message and try the suggested link). < I find no NT APM/Legacy Support, again I've to stop here >

6. In the device usage drop down list, select Use this device (enable) Hit the OK button and then close the device manger. You may need to reboot, but now it should shut your computer completely off on shutdown. < everything not available >

7. If none of the above applies, or helps, try the following site:
http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnxp.htm expand it and bring up the properties for the node.
< I find nothing that tell me how to enable or disable APM Support >

8. I've email to Sony Support and as them how to enable APM Support ---Rino

I'm not familiar with your specific PC so I don't know if it uses APM but if
it does, that is the likely culprit since, as I said, it is disabled by
default in XP. Asuuming XP did not come with your system, then the above is
certainly a possibility.

As to where things are or why you aren't seeing them, first you need to be
in an administrator account. Second, if you are not seeing what I describe,
it's possible Sony has some proprietary interface of which I'm not aware or
familiar as "Monitor Power" should located in the bottom section of the
Screen Saver tab.

Not knowing your setup, I'm at a loss to help any further and you have done
what I would have suggested and that is contact Sony.

Rino
Please don't. We have people from all over the world viewing these boards,
many on dialup paying per minute charges and they wouldn't appreciate it.

As I said previously, you should now take this up with Sony tech support.
you are more than welcome to give them the information I've posted about
APM, although, if your system does not use APM and, given that the tab
doesn't appear that is likely the case, the only other thing I can offer is
the link at the end of my first response as follows:

Hi Michael et al,
I read several times on http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnxp.htm and found nothing could fix it. Even Sony Internet Support Team could do nothing on this simple request. They ask me to contact Microsoft. I just hope one day there should be a law to use their own software and never depend on some other company because it's in the news --- the car manufacturer used tires belong to another company then accident happened, so is dispute & litigation erupted.

Regarding attachment, is it not to see is to believe? And if someone who is curious reading all these Posts --- they should not complain because I never make complaints if I go out and look. They all know how to cancel the download if take time. I just want you to verify what I got here and maybe there is a clue to it. By the way, don't worry -- I'll not. That's why I ask first. I could also send to your email address but I know it is invalid.

Thanks because I really appreciate your kind response & hints.

Rino

P.S. // I did several responses before and help several person if I know.

Hi Michael,
I forgot to clarify that we're all 5 Administrator accounts and no Guest account configured and still we could not find anything about APM. We all tried the Administrator Tools in Control Panel but didn't help. Maybe your Administrator account is more powerful than ours ;o) Regards & just keep hoping someone will come with more brilliant idea.

First, if you have a relatively new system, APM is not the issue as no new
systems use APM. Second, if you don't have the tab and you find none of
what I previously mentioned in Device Manager, again, your system is
probably not APM complient and is likely a newer system possibly using ACPI.
There is no point in our seeing it as it really adds nothing. I don't have
the tab on my NON-APM system either.

As to attachments, many users, especially those who pay per minute charges
work offline, hence they download all new messages and they don't assume
attachments are going to show up in a group of this type.

Correct, the e-mail address in my newsgroup properties is invalid to help
avoid spam.

Hi Michael..
I believed you also --- that you're honest, a good fellow and willing
to help. I must tell you that I also learned many good things from
your Posts even though I'm 61 and still keep learning. I've no formal
education on PC or the Internet thing but learned by myself and by
asking questions.

I've enough courage only last year, went to Fry's Electronics store &
spent over $900 of PC parts. Assemble in 2 days & 1 more day for
software installation & configurations. Now, I could assembled in
half a day but nobody wants to buy because people can buy a complete
PC system around $300. My point is that I am very satisfied because I
can built a good PC & I've learned many things especially it beat
those commercial (same price) PC in quality of robust & performance.
It even beat my own Sony RX-450. My home built PC has special
keyboard keys and one of that is to Shut Down PC. It required one
single press & PC is off. Now, I want the same feature but this time
an Icon in desktop of my 2 yrs old Sony RX-450 PC use to shut it off.

I know this is not difficult to accomplish and when I find & test it.
I'll Post here the solution so others may also benefited.

Sincerely & All The Best,

Rino
Thank you for the kind words, Rino. That's a great way to learn computers
but building your own.

In any event, you might want to check your system BIOS to see if there's a
setting there that might be causing this. Just for the record, the first
boot screen usually has some key stroke to get you into setup, sometimes it
says "hit delete" or some such thing. Anyway, look for that, and then check
your BIOS for a possible setting that might be causing this issue.

Hi Michael,
I tried that too and it didn't help. Just for the record, maybe others would like to know more on Sony RX Series PC and I'm not sure if this is true to all Sony PC. Better check it out before your computer become defective.

There are 11 Trouble Shooting Steps or Mode to enable it press F8 upon booting up.
Press F2 upon Sony Logo Windows appear to open BIOS Utilities.

All The Best,
Rino

P.S.// Just keep you finger cross because I'm now testing another shut down utilities for WinXP --- will keep you posted.

Hi PC Enthusiasts,
Yes, strange thing happened to my Sony PC when I switch on my power strip (PS) you know the long thing with 6 AC outlets which my Sony PC, Monitor & PC Speakers all plugged in and START INSTANTLY. I noticed it when I left my PC speaker & monitor in ON switch position and I've installed the Shutdown.exe last 5 day ago. I've been using my Shut Down PC Icon since then and every time when I switch back (switch on) my PS, everything & especially my Sony PC is AUTOMATICALLY SWITCH ON. Yes! No need to press the blue power switch but not before when I've to shut down through Start button. Now I used only one switch to control 4 equipment.

I tried this new found feature of shutdown.exe in other brand PC but negative results. Hope all Sony PC users will try this out.

All The Best,
Rino
