Shut Down Button

Why won't MS give us a shutdown and/or restart button quickly accessible.

Maybe there is a way to change this. If so someone tell me.

I have to hit the window button, click the little right pointing arrow next
to the lock button and then a menu to shut down and restart and other things
is there.

Why not have a little button right next to the Window button that I can made
do any of those things. I would put the restart button there since I can
use my power button as a shut down. But why or why??

Yup. Agree 100% At least make the "Power Button" of the Start Menu user
programmable with our favourite choice.

I have sent this as feedback to MSFT. I am sure many others have, as well,
but the more the merrier and the whole squeaky wheel thing, so would you be
so kind as to do the same?

For ShutDown
Right click on desktop>New Shortcut>
In the line that says Location put this:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 002

For Restart
Do the above and in the Location line put:
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 002

You can rename the restart shortcut and change
the icons of both.

Also, you could just do a search from the start menu
for "shutdown", it should come up under Programs-
then right click that and select either "Add to Quick Launch"
or "Pin To Start Menu". I added "logoff" to my quick launch.

You can also change those icons by right clicking and hitting
properties> change icon.

It's for the same reason they pulled the option to password-protect
individual folders. IT admins don't want that stuff in the hands of
end-users. If the button were too easy to get to, the end users would
forever be shutting down and restarting their machines by accident. (And
wouldn't save their work when prompted either).

You're welcome!

Been using that in XP for years. I do believe someone
else also posted those shortcuts here.

One of the things I have really warmed up to is the
convenience of Search from the Start Menu. It is easy
and fast. Plus, being able to execute it from the search
or right clicking it and adding it to Quick Launch or the
Start Menu is great.

It isn't easy to teach the old dogs the new tricks, but when I use something
other than Vista I realize how much I actually appreciate the indexing. I'm
looking at a few freebies that do the same for XP, and I'll post when I'm
satisfied with one. (and it won't be Google Desktop)

Also, once you have all the installations done and your preferences set in
Vista, and you use Vista as an average user, the UAC ceases to become
anything more than an afterthought IMHO. I have even changed my user
account to standard and haven't seen a Grey Screen Of Pause for a couple of
days. Good security, I believe, but unfortunately most people believe they
are "power users" (and good drivers) and will deactivate UAC.

I had some issues with Google Desktop. Thought Windows Desktop Search
caused way too much disk activity. I have been thinking about trying it again.
Would be curious as to what you think.

I turned the UAC protection back on. I'm pretty much done with installing any
more programs and like you, my settings are set. UAC reminds me of a more
complex Grr! http://www.greyware.com/software/grr/ that I use in XP. It pops
a growling dog when changes are made to the registry and other places.
Windows Defender does some of those pop-up warnings too.

I've thought about trying Exalead. A friend says it works great. Their
website search engine is pretty cool.

I agree 100%, and I've also sent feedback to MS about this. The new
Start menu makes Restart and Shutdown very inconvenient. It's a huge
step backwards from the XP interface, IMO.

Another annoying change to the Start menu is the fact that in Vista, you
now have to click on folders to open them. In XP, you could just pause
on a folder, for example the Accessories folder, and it would open. I
really liked that feature and wish it would be included in Vista.

If you right click the start button, and choose customize there is a place
to allow this to come back if its unchecked. It does seem a little slower
to me but I always adjusted mine with TweakUI.

Blue, circular icon thingy on the Vista Desktop that calls itself
"Feedback."

You can still make a shortcut to your favorite shutdown method, of course
but it would be nice to make that button configurable.

The TechBeta folks have been having just this discussion with the Shell team
for a year now. This is as far as we have gotten with them. It is now
locked down for Vista. There will not be any more changes to this
functionality.

The argument on the Shell team's side was that the arrangement of buttons
fits the commonest profiles of users: Enterprise users (knowledge workers
and such) and most consumers who seldom if ever actually shutdown or
restart.

We couldn't even get an enlargement of the tiny arrow on the right. It took
a lot of convincing just to get the context menu added. You used to have to
actually click the arrow to get the options.

you mean they've been hearing from actual users who are all saying this and
they are saying no?

that is the height of arrogance, if that is the case.

C

Colin Barnhorst

They are saying no. They are holding to the view that TechBeta folks are
not typical users (no argument there) and that our preferences do not
represent the user base in the wild. (Probably true enough).

Colin:
Jasons' solution for the shut down button posted earlier in this
thread works. I haven't found a way to change the lock button though.

C

Colin Barnhorst

I am sure. But what I was relating was the discussion in TechBeta with the
Shell team about the whole layout of the buttons and their functions. That,
of course, is just historical because Vista is now feature-locked big time.
