Problem: I use a router to connect to the Internet. I have set up the LAN
connection on my laptop. When I connect the cable, the connection shows as
"Connected, 100mbps", but I cannot browse the Internet (or update programs).
What is going on and how can I fix it?
(PS: I have just reinstalled XP on the laptop after a reformat. It connected
to the Internet fine through the router before.)
Even so
If all your comps can't connect to the internet , then
call your ISP and check that your router has [physically] connected -
no problem with line- and has logged on properly so has internet
access. You may want to call your router company and ask them if your
router indicates that it's giving internet access.
You may do ipconfig, see if the ips are from the router (e.g. 192.. or
10... ), that's good, but still, turn it off and on. Check if it's not
getting one, so gives a standard windows one, ilke 169.. or if it
says media disconnected. So , certainly turn it off and on.
Check your router isn't hot, put back of hand over it. Take if off the
carpet if it's on there, turn it off and on(soft reset). (you may want
to do a hard reset on it, your router company would know how)
Only need to turn it off and on once ;-)
And have another router lying around!
That's for DSL. Which I find tends to use a router/modem. At least in
the UK.
For Cable they tend to use a cable modem and a router , and there's an
order with turning off and on. e.g. NTL cable modems I've seen have a
sticker on saying it. Or you call the cable modem people and ask them!
Another thing..
Try another browser.
If it works, then that will indicate if it's an internet explorer
issue. Maybe malware got to it somehow. Odd, since you reformatted
though.
And if you can't access the internet, the way to really check if you
can't is to e.g. ping google, google always replies.
And you can try pinging the ip, e.g. 64.233.183.103 , to see if it's a
DNS issue. In which case, since your DNS server is prob your router,
(ipconfig /al to check). Reset your router! call router people if it's
a DNS issue. If you enter your ISP's DNS server manually you prob need
to enter the comp's ip manually too. I don't normally do that.
