Shortcut Icon Mystery

I just installed the InstaPostage application from endicia.com. The icon
on the desktop has the stupid default Windows icon. When I click on
Properties to change the icon, the application name is filled in but
grayed out. The option to change the icon is grayed. The application
(instapostage.exe) has an icon in it because I was able to create a new
shortcut manually. However, I would like to know how and why the other
icon is different from normal.

You'll have to ask the applications authors about this one, it's not a
Windows issue

I am the InstaPostage developer. I've checked all the setup project
settings and they are correct. The icon is selected for the shortcuts,
as confirmed by the fact that they display okay when InstaPostage is
installed on Win XP. I'll keep looking into it, but I've found no
leads so far.

If you will send me an email address, I'll send you the shortcut so that
you can investigate it.

I found this on the web:
If you add 24x24 image formats in your icon, it won't be
compatible with Windows 98 and 2000. If you are using these versions,
the icon will be considered as invalid by Windows.

Our icon included 16x16, 24x24, and 48x48 sizes. Deleting the 24x24
size did the trick.

The InstaPostage installer:
http://download.endicia.com/InstaPostage/InstaPostageWebSetup.exe

Have you removed the 24x24 from the installer? If so, do I reinstall
over the current installation, or do I need to remove and then install?

Since you're the developer, you know that a major problem with
InstaPostage is that if the sheet jams while printing, the postage on
the sheet is gone. Since I need to print a number of stamps for $7.95, I
am extremely reluctant to do so. However, it seems that if I print to
file and then copy that file to prn, I can overcome the problem. If I
only print the sheet accurately once, I am not violating any postage
regulations. Do you have a better solution?

I have NO interest in wasting $240 because of a printer jam.

Just download and run the installer; no need to uninstall first.

We are working on a reprint feature. But I have to say that you are an
unusual case -- printing $240 at a time is not typical. If you're doing
that often you may want to make sure you have a good printer that is not
prone to jamming. Also, in the meantime you can turn on "keep printed
jobs" in the printer properties. Just make sure you don't accidentally
duplicate postage. The USPS gets very annoyed at that :->

Will do. I ship 12 ounce packages overseas regularly. They are $7.95US
each. Even the best printers can jam. And I have no intention of
violating federal law by reprinting postage.
