Shortcut for Comments in Microsoft 2007

I have been using MSWord 2007 for several months with no issues. Then
suddenly this week, I can't use my shortcut for the Comments/Notes option.

When I want to insert a comment, I usually just hit Ctrl + ALT + M.
However, this week, some other search function keeps popping up instead of
the usual comment bubble. All other shortcuts work the same except this one;
so it's confusing me.

Any suggestions as to how to make my Insert Comments shortcut work again?

Thanks!

We need more clues. What does the "other search function" say? Is there a
diaglog box or some other clue? Have you recently installed something? Could
this be a byproduct of a non-Word program you recently installed, i.e., one
that is using Ctrl+Alt+M for its own purposes? If so, perhaps you can
configure it to use a different shortcut.

Thanks for the questions. I get a pop-up window that says "Windows Desktop
Searching" and gives me a long list of files. It's as if I had completed a
search for something, but I can't find a common denominator in the programs
and files listed. But it calls up files and programs from throughout the
system: outlook, regular files, programs, etc.

I have not installed anything new in the weeks before and after the shortcut
issues as far as I can remember. And the funny thing is that this issue is
occuring on two, separate computers that are not networked.

What might help is that I often work off a portable hard drive. I don't know
if that would cause any issues, but I thought I'd throw it out there for
consideration.

I am completely willing to program it to recognize a different shortcut, as
even a short-term work-around. So if you know how to do that, then that would
be great to get me by. I use the Comments function so often, it's a real pain
to lose the shortcut suddenly.

Thanks!

Click in the Review tab so that the New Comment command is exposed.

Press Ctrl+Alt+[plus sign on the number pad].

This turns the mouse pointer into a cloverleaf pattern. Use that cloverleaf
to click on New Comment in the ribbon.

This brings up the Customize Keyboard dialog box. Click in the Press new
shortcut key box, the press the combination you want to use (if Alt+Ctrl+M
is not displayed under Current keys, you can press that combination, in
fact). Click Assign, then Close, and see if the combination you assigned
works.
