Short pauses while playing videos, music or games

I am having a strange problem in Windows XP. When
playing videos, music or games, the computer will stutter
and pause for a few seconds then go back to normal for a
while. I've had this problem with Windows Media Player,
RealPlayer and Quicktime as well as several different
games. I've tried several virus tools and trojan horse
removerers and found nothing. I've observed the problem
with Windows Task Manager open. The problem occurs when
the Image Name "system", User Name "system" starts using
a large percent of the CPU. Any idea what the problem
could be?

If your on-line when this happens, it may be that your modem is one of the slower ones. My PC does the same thing, but if I go back and replay it after it's been played once, then it doesn't do that usually. If your big on pulling stuff off the internet, then get the fastest modem.

I use a cable modem with roadrunner. The problem occurs
both with files I download and files are already on the
computer
