ShellNew having no effect?

Under what circumstances (under Vista or XP) does ShellNew in the registry
fail to have an effect? I have something like this:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
.tex
ShellNew
NullFile (empty string)

On one of my computers I get "New .tex file" or words to that effect in the
list of New... things when I right-click on a blank area of the desktop and
choose New; on two other computers it's not included.

What can prevent ShellNew from having its expected effect?

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

Missing file class data is the usual cause. Try one of these:

1. Export the .tex file association settings (.reg) and merge it in your system.

2. Compare the file association settings between and amend the changes yourself. You can view the association settings using FileExtInfo: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Thanks! I'll export everything having to do with .tex on a computer where
it works, and look carefully at it and see what's missing on the computers
where it doesn't work.
