"SHELL" problem after Autoexec Quik-Fix!

J

Jason Williams

Hi. I'm new here and I too have been having
the "Autoexec" problem. Unless I can get this figured
out, I'm probably gonna' uninstall Service Pack 2.

I've made the necessary adjustments that were outlined in
the Quik-Fix, but now I'm getting a "Can't find SHELL"
error. What to do?

You'd be better off posting to a Windows XP newsgroup, Jason. This
newsgroup supports games on XP. Much sure you tell everything you've done,
including booting into Safe Mode and checking for error messages. Post
those, too, when you capture them. Sounds like you installed with your
anti-virus software active.

Hi Jason,

You can use the same quick fix method to copy
Shell.dll from Windows\System to Windows\System32

Hopefully that will be the last quick fix you'll need. :)

Jimmy,
Thanks; I think that may have done the trick. I posted
here because this problem in XP was, and has been,
exclusive to game installations only. I had disabled all
firewall and security measures in the XP Service Pak 2
right after I installed it because that stuff is a
complete hindrance.
Hopefully, I will be able to install my older games now.
Thanks again,
-Jason.

You're welcome Jason! .... but ....
Even *I* who doesn't run antivirus software on his
system *always* keeps the XP firewall enabled.

Why? It blocks port scanning skiddies;
It blocked Sasser;
It blocked Sasser;
It blocked Sasser. ;-)
