Had one. It was the second computer I bought, but the first I bought for
myself.
$2400 in 1984 dollars, with a tractor feed printer and 64kb of extended RAM
and dual 5 1/2 inch floppy drives.
Had one of those little blue notch cutters so you could notch the disks and
use both sides of the floppy.
Wrote a random access database program for it, which loaded the data into an
array in memory.
Had to write the array and data cells to fit within the sectors on the
floppy or I'd get errors.
Went through half a box ( big box ) of printer paper debugging the program.
iirc it took about 4 minutes to load the array.

Whoopie.

on my commodore 64 I just attached a switch to the side of the floppy drive
so I could fool it into thinking the notch was present or not. I remember
how satisfying it was to actually modify a device that was "cutting edge" at
the time. then I took about 15 years off. from working with computers in
any way. ;-)

Remember the disks had a hole just outside if the center that a light shined
through to a photocell so the drive would know where the beginning of the
disk was.

it was a different world wasn't it? I really shouldn't have taken all that
time off. it's tough to catch up when you're an old bastard like me. ;-)

Don't feel bad. My oldest son, the real computer whiz, does things with
visual studio that leaves me scratching my head.
Also, I was over at his house one day and his computer screen was monochrome
and fill of hex data. Asked him what he was doing. Oh, I'm just tweaking
the resident CPU ( intel celeron ) program and turning off un-needed
features. Um...ah.....OK

don't you wish you could go back to that age while retaining all you have
learned from the "lumps and bumps" along the way.

Gotta have a soft, sweet, yellow apple here.

Funny thing is my maiden name was a variety of apple - a red one. :)

Then again Crab Apples are red when they're ripe.
Sorry JL, couldn't resist.
