According to Livingston's Windows Secrets Newsletter, there's some
newly released freeware (registerware, time limited) which may serve as
an alternative to Windows Update in addition to being a guard against
spyware. I haven't tried any of it, just attempted to register and
haven't yet gotten an e-mail about it. The Shavlik site is far from
clear about this actually being offered free; I didn't see any mention
of it. Clicking the 'Download Now!' link took me to a registration
page. In another group, someone said it requires .NET.

Shavlik released its three free programs to give customers
support for all the older software they still use. A huge
side-benefit of this for individual Windows users is that a 10-PC
version of NetChk Protect is one of the free downloads:

* NetChk Analyzer for Microsoft is a graphical program that scans
drives for Microsoft applications only (without deploying any
patches). It's free for an unlimited time.

* NetChk Analyzer is a command-line utility that scans drives for
both Microsoft and non-Microsoft applications (without deploying
any patches). It's free for one year for 1 to 25 PCs, then $4 per
seat per year.

* NetChk Protect (the subject of my article today) is a graphical
program that scans drives for both Microsoft and non-Microsoft
applications and deploys needed patches. It's free for one year
for 1 to 25 PCs, then $25/PC for the second year and about $6/PC
for later years, with a minimum license of 5 PCs.

Which means it is not 'freeware'...so I would guess most of us would not
be interested.

The snipping could make it look as if I posted only about NetChk Protect.
NetChk Analyzer is time-unlimited freeware, at least according to the
newsletter.

I still haven't gotten any e-mail from Shavlik in response to my
registration attempt. (It may be because I used a directory assistance
number for my phone number and an obviously invalid street address.)

It *does* require .NET. But according to Livingston
( http://windowssecrets.com/comp/060713/ ), Shavlik plans to offer a
free online version in October. Of coure, it remains to be seen.

For MS updates, I like the information I get from AskWoody
( http://askwoody.com/ ). He seems to keep on top of the latest
update news, especially the update bugs.

And this site ( http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html )
offers easy access to a lot of patches.

Any telephone and address is fine, phoney or not...it's the email addy that
counts and in this case, freebies like gmail et al are not acceptable and
you cannot complete/submit.

I used a non-freebie e-mail addy, and the form was accepted. Still no
e-mail has arrived.
