Sharing SOME subfolders, not all.

I'm running two XP Home SV2 computers. My desktop has 2 hard drives. All of
my music/photos and other media is on the second hard drive. I have selected
to share this drive over the network.

I can access this second drive as a folder in the "My Network Places" folder
on my laptop. In my folder entitled "mp3" I can access only 2 of the 10
folders. One of these folders I can open the folders inside and access the
files. The other I can not. All of the folders which I can not open give
the message "\\computername\folder\folder is not accessable. You may not have
permission to use this network ..."

BUT I can manually go into every folder that I get this error message from
and turn sharing on and get the files on the laptop! I'm confused and I
haven't found a similar problem on any message board. Maybe it's just so
simple I'm the only idiot who couldn't figure it out.

That is slightly strange, and unusual. Once a folder has been shared, the
share contains all subfolders, they cannot be excluded from the share. Only
one share should be needed for any given folder-tree.

It's possible the problem lies with file-and-folder permissions, which are
often confused with share-permissions. If the subfolders themselves have
restrictive permissions set on them, it won't be possible to browse them even
though they are inside an accessible share.

File and folder permissions are found under the 'Security' tab of the
folder-properties. Before changing them, suggest reading-up on how they work,
as there are several pitfalls to avoid.

Ian,

I'm running Home Edition on both of these computers. The only option I seem
to have is click the checkbox which says share this folder on the network.
Can I get to these file and folder permissions? I've read about SFS vs. NTFS
(i think that's what it's called) could that be an issue?

I've read that you can't share critical files in XP Home. Is there any way
that XP thinks I have these in these folders? Is there a naming convention
that could be throwing things off? If this is difficult don't worry about it
because I do have the workaround of sharing every subfolder in the tree
individually, which does work. But if you can think of anything else I would
appreciate it.

In order to get to the Security tab in XP Home, you must start the
computer in Safe Mode. The file system must be NTFS and not FAT32. I
don't know what "SFS" is supposed to mean but I expect you are just
misremembering this. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8
key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to the right
menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here.

XP Home restricts access to users' home directories (My Documents) and
Program Files. However, you can share subfolders in those directors. A
simpler thing to do might be to just put the music files into the
Shared Files Folder instead.
