sharing problem: read-only setting changes on reboot

This is a strange problem.
I turn sharing on for a directory (containing subdirectories)
with "read-only" not checked.
Other machines must be able to write to the shared files.
But, after rebooting this server,
the setting changes to a checkmark in the "read-only" option.

There are two users defined, and it seemed to work better
after unchecking "read-only" for BOTH users.
However, now a reboot still checks this option.

Another, possibly related issue:
I noticed the following possibilities where I only expected two:
- box unchecked
- box checked
- box grey, with or without check mark
- box green.

If someone could explain why a reboot changes settings,
or the meaning of the grey and green checkbox settings,
I would be very grateful.

XP just marks all folders read-only by default, BUT, the folders are not
read-only and
should work as normal. Just ignore the read-only mark. If you have a piece
of software that is having probs writing to a folder then try to get an xp
complatable version of the program.
Most likely if it is a well written app or its just files your coping over
then is it not the read-only check
box, more likely a permissions or security setting.

Here is some info on it:

XP makes folders read-only by design. In XP the read only attribute
is only used by explorer to see if the folder is a special or a system
folder. Read up on it:
