Sharing files between XP house and W98 workshop?

B

Brian A.

I've got the info from another post now and will look into it's settings.
Sorry, you've lost me there. What has to be set? What is wrong?

The DNS Servers IP set at 192.168.1.1 is wrong and it should be an IP of your ISP's
DNS (Domain Name Server/s). That IP is your routers IP which is the gateway to the
WAN from your LAN, your router is not a DNS. If 192.168.1.1 is listed as a DNS IP in
either XP or 98's network TCP/IP properties, it needs to be removed and DNS should
also be disabled if it's enabled in the 98.

I'm going to read back through the thread to try to put the pieces together as I
understand them at this moment. I had a quick peek at BT this morning before
scooting out to work, but not Zyxel. I'm going to have a better peek at both and add
what I find relevant to the pieces, sit back, have a cold one and see what if
anything is an issue.
Find what? I already reported all the settings...

See above.
Where does dial.pipex.com enter the equation? My Broadband ISP is BT.

Your munged addy.
Default browser is Firefox. But in IE

those are already configured correctly.

Ok, going back to piece the process and hopefully process the peace.

OK, glad you're on the case. Hope to hear from you next week. Have a
good weekend!

Terry,

Let's make sure the workgroup name is the same. After reading:
<quote>
If I open Entire Network, and then Microsoft Windows Network, after a wait I see
'Mshome'. But when I d-click that, after a very long wait, I get:

"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available".
</quote>

I think it may be the issue or part of because 98 uses the default name "mshome"
and IIRC XP uses the default name "workgroup".

In 98 right click Network Neighborhood on the desktop.
Click Properties.
Under the Configuration tab make sure the installed components/protocols are:
Client for MS Networks.
Your NIC.
TCP/IP.
File and Print Sharing for MS Networks.
If you do not use a password when booting 98, set the Primary Network Logon as
Windows Logon if not already. If you change this you may be prompted for a user
name/pw during next boot, if prompted Press OK - Not Cancel to continue booting.

Under the Identifications tab.
If the name in the Workgroup box is Mshome, change it to Terry1.
Click Ok.

You may be asked for the 98 CD so have it on hand.

If NN is not present on the desktop, click Start > Settings > Control Panel >
Network applet.
Check/do as suggested above.

-------------------------------
In XP right click MyComputer.
Click Properties > Computer Name tab > Change button.
In the Member Of box make sure Workgroup is selected.
Change the name to Terry1.
Click Ok > Apply > Ok.
Reboot if prompted.

Is this XP Pro or Home?

Hi Brian,

Thanks a bunch for your continued interest. I'm setting off on longish
trip after breakfast, back Sun/Mon, so will revisit the W98 settings
then.

Meanwhile, here on the XP Home PC:

Full computer name: TERRY.
Workgroup: MSHOME

BTW, at first I fretted about the capitalisation, but it seems
irrelevant. Same applies to that full stop/period, which doesn't
appear elsewhere. (Just sloppy design I think).

Name on W98 is presently TERRY-SHED, and it reports workgroup as
Mshome. (This time without capitals; go figure!)

I'll try those changes early next week.
