Sharing a scanner over TCP/IP

Hi,

We used to be able to share scanners over the network with early versions of
Windows (much like we did printers). Microsoft's KB article Q304097 clearly
states that this is no longer possible. Why is this? I would like to access
an HP ScanJet 5300C scanner connected through USB to an XP-based system from
another XP-based machine. Can this be done in any way?

Thanks!

Unless the scanner in question is a networkable device, no it is not
possible. Epson do make some networkable scanners, they start at about
$300, so if your scanner is a standard one costing between $30-$100 is it
probably not networkable.

Check at the HP website.

I really can not understand why anyone would want to do this.

You get up from your computer, walk to another computer to place a document
on the platen. Then you go back to your computer to "scan"? Then, you walk
back to the other computer to retrieve your original document!

Why?????

Well I guess you could yell at whoever is at the PC to which the scanner is
attached and tell them to put whatever it is you want scanned in the
scanner...... and then yell at them to remove it afterwards, but my theory
is why on earth spend $3000 on a network scanner when you could buy 4 x $50
scanners and still have enough left to buy a whole new PC!

IMHO the whole point of a network is that you do things on or via the other
networked PCs that mean you don't have to get up and walk to them!

But then again, perhaps we've just thought it through a bit more than
others!

It gets even better: while you are walking back to your desk, person
#2 walks up to the scanner, takes out your document, puts theirs in,
then goes back to their system to scan it. Meanwhile, you are
scanning their document.

Networkable scanners never made any sense to me.

This question always seems to encourage a knee jerk response than no
sane person would want to do this.

I have a networked HP d145 shared between three machines in the same
room. I also have three teenage daughters. Before I networked the d145
the daughter who needed to scan was never the one using the PC with
the scanned connected. Now there are no arguments and my life is much
quieter.
