Shared Epson Printer Wont Print

I have an Epson CX6600 printer - its an all in one scanner/printer/copier
with a USB port. I have two computers, both running Windows XP Pro.

I shared the printer on the computer that is directly connected to the PC.
Logged into the other computer, added a printer from the network, found the
printer, added it, set it to default. A driver was automatically installed.
Everything seemed fine.

I cant successfully print from the networked machine. The printer workds
from the directly connected printer. I dont get any error messages (at
either end). And, strangely, the printer queue on the directly connected
machine even queues up the file that is printed. However, the queue never
flushes and the printing never starts. Whats up with this thing ?

I cant even do a test page from the networked computer.

Please help!

Brett,
Most USB connected All-in-Ones like the Epson CX6600, can not be used as Network printer. You can try buying a print server, connect the printer to that by USB cable. Then the print server can be connected by Ethernet cable, to the network. Check with Epson to see if there is a print server for that model. You may have to transfer files between the PC's, before printing or after scanning.

Even with the print server, some of the features of the AIO may not be available to the network, particularly the scanning feature.

I dont care about scanning so much, just the printing.

I wrote an email to Epson Customer Support.
There reply was a 5 page long email that included instructions for every
possible operating system, so I have not included it here. They also had
statements such as: "NOTE: if any step can't be done please proceed anyway",
which I am not sure what to do with.

They did however give instructions that seemed to indicate that I had to
load there drivers from the original CD onto both PCs and then disable
monitoring of ink levels. Here is a copy of that section from the email:
"Once you have installed the driver directly from the cd on each client
computer and configured the driver for sharing please also disable
the status monitor on the printer driver for both client computers"

The best thing you can do is follow their instructions, they would know best.

1. They are basically saying that the copier, faxing, and/or scanning feature may not be able to be run by network PC's. Only the one that is directly connected to it. When you connected the PC to the network, it copy just the driver files to the 2nd PC, not any software from the host machine. But that was not enough, you need to install the software from the CD's that came with it.

2. You may be required to install addition software to each PC, to get the functions of the printer, to work. It is not just a simple driver file installation, as some inkjet printers may require. Once the software is installed, you need to remove some of the monitoring features, that are part of it. This monitoring can only be done by the PC, directly connected to it.

3. The "Proceed Anyway" instruction, is because XP may pop-up a window, stating that the drivers being installed hasn't been certified/tested by MS. Supposedly Epson has tested the drivers/software on XP machines, themselves, and certified it themselves.

I have the same printer, although I do not have it networked. I recall
reading somewhere this tip reguarding networking this printer. If you have
not done so already, try this:
Right click on your Epson Stylus Series printer icon in the task bar (down
near the clock)
Then choose monitoring preferences
If the box that says "allow monitoring of shared printers" is not checked
try checking it and click ok.

You might have to do this on just the comptuer the printer is actually
connected or just the other or maybe even both. I don't remember if what I
read went in to much detail. Good Luck and please post your results so
others may learn from them.

Does that explain anything that I have missed ? Does it change the answer
at all ?

(wireless) to his wireless (Linksys) netwerk.
Strange that with his Packerd Bell and is Desktop he could not share
the printer.
I suggested een printerserver connected with is Linksys router. About
30 euros and now he kan use the printer from both workstations.

I have a wireless printserver and it works also verry fine. He switches
mij printer on or off. The printer stands on the 3e floor and I work a
lot downstairs. It is not neccesary to connect the printer to a
workstation to let it work. In this case you need to leave the PC the
whole day on.

The Epson CX 6600 Can be shared with my laptop, but with een other
Laptop it won't work.
Off course it must be possible to do it with every computer, but my
brother stopped after 3 days and bought a printserver.
What is the secret???????????

Clemens,
One of the things that I can think of, that makes the use of a print server necessary with your network, especially using a wireless router. I hope I can explain it properly based on my personal experiences with, and limited knowledge on networking.

1. I believe is that a "standard" USB cable can only act like a "straight" through cable. And the server, allows it to act as a "cross-over" one. So traffic between the networked PC's and the printer don't collide, when sending data back and forth. If you choose to Network PC's using ICS and USB, you need a special network capable USB cable to make this work. Because the PC directly connected to the printer, does this function poorly, or not at all.

2. The other thing, with many cable modems, you can connect them to a single PC using a USB cable. But many routers require that the connection between the cable modem and the router's Uplink port, be a Ethernet connection, and cannot be done with a USB cable. Plus the Ethernet connection is more stable than the USB one. So the server changes the connection from the printer to the router to an Ethernet one, making it more stable. What I have seen, is that most if not all, printers that are "network capable" will use an Ethernet connector, instead of a USB one, and manage the back and forth traffic, because of features that are built into it.
