SHARE.EXE was not loaded or a shared region was locked

I have Windows XP Home Edition/Service Pack 2.
A program that has been on my computer suddenly stopped working. I used the
Windows Add/Remove a Program to remove the program, then tried to reload it
using the CD. I keep getting the message: Install\setup.exe:SHARE.EXE was
not loaded or a shared region was locked.
I've turned off the computer, then turned it back on and tried to load the
program again, but with no luck...just the same message.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
XKat

Create a notepad file and call it share.exe and place it in the system32
folder, it should satisfy the install package. The file is not usually
needed as such but some install packages just check to see that the file
exists, the installer doesn't care or know that the file is bogus, it
just wants to see that it exists. This file was used in DOS or Windows
for Workgroups for sharing but the newer versions of Windows don't use
this sharing mechanism although usually the file is in the folder for
the reasons explained.

There is already an application file Share.Exe in my system32 folder, so that
doesn't seem to be the issue. Any other thoughts?

I'll have to do some searching. What is the program? Anything about it
on their website's support section? Are any errors recorded in the
Event Log when this happens? Maybe the installer thinks that share.exe
should be somewhere else, like the %systemroot% or %systemroot\system
folder?

Hi again,
This is new territory for me ... didn't even know there was such a thing as
an event log. At any rate:
• The program is Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0, which came on a CD for HP's ScanJet
3200c. Even though it's several years old, the front of the software CD says
that it's for Windows XP. I've successfully used the CD on another computer
that has Windows XP.
• As for Error messages: I was doing so many things to try to correct this
last night that I'm a bit muddled as to which error messages might be
relevant. One thing is clear...the following sequence occurred over and over
and over and over and over and ...well, you get the point ...

This event also occurred a few times:

Also, when I tried to shut down the computer last night in utter
frustration, I kept getting a pop-up window (and unfortunately, I was too
fatigued to remember to write down what it said) that had to do with my f:\
drive --my CD drive where I'd been trying to load this software from-- asking
me to choose CANCEL or ABORT. Neither one worked so I finally just unplugged
the computer :-( This morning, when I powered it up again, there was a
message to put the ScanJet 3200c software into the f:\ drive, which I did --
but then the same sequence of problems started up again, where I get the
"SHARE.EXE was not loaded or a shared region was locked" message.

1- Which Windows XP version do you have, XP Home or XP Pro?

2- Do you have any Quicken software installed on the computer?
