SFC in retail version of XP?

With WIN XP Home Ed, SP3. Just reinstalled/partitioned WIN Home Ed with a
retail version that had SP2 (not bad for an 81-yr-old greatgramma, eh?). Now
cannot sfc /scannow without the "install disk" msg.
Am concerned about using my retail disk to scannow, because in Windows
Search I cannot find folder i386 or winnet.exe nor winnet32.exe. However,
Search reveals 15 files: C\WIN\Driver Cache...Service Pack Files for both SP2
and SP3...and 11 WIN\sys32\reinstall files.
I cannot use my original WIN XP Home Ed OS disk because I get msg setup.exe
failed (Ox000006).
So would using my retail version now installed work to scannow? I'd hate to
have to spend all the time to start over reinstalling the original OS disk
and all programs I've reinstalled...but could if I have to.
Request your expert advice.

WHY on earth do you want to run that on a new installation? Are you
already having problems with that installation, or are you just
worried that something might have been missed??

what are you doing ot induce the Windows file system check tool? after you
updated to SP3 did you receive any error messages?

whatever happened , when the "insert disk" message pops up you could just
point to the Win OS disk - do not allow the setup.exe to run - when you inset
the win OS disk close any popup window and point SFC to the directory
containing the file you need (ie:winnet.exe)

SFC is a file protection utiliity that replaces the C:\windows\ files that
may have been corrupted with the original which would either be in a
temporary installation directory (ie C;\ufd98fyds8yf\SP3 setup) or on your
Win OS disk.

again, it would be more helpful if you could explain what led to the
"replace file" message and what file in particular.

there should be no need to reinstall, sounds like you just need to replace a
couple windows files

No, no problems; just wanted to have SFC available at a later time I might
need it.

To refresh: At "Run", typed sfc /scannow. Msg came up with File Protection
screen which ran briefly, but then msg read to insert CD. As I said, cannot
use original CD now with Ox000006 msg.

Did not have a "replace file" msg. Already had read the link
provided...reason I was lead to search for I386 files that I provided in my
first msg.

Maybe I should forget about ever having to use SFC, but do seem to have a
problem with opening backups on CR-R's and floppy A disks.

Running at command prompt didn't help either; still needed original disk in
Files Protection.

After reading other posts on same subject, it appears that my problem is
related to SP3, but suggestions on slipstreaming, making reg entries, all
seem to be beyond my current needs (Did not find an I386 folder at C drive;
however found it on the WIN XP retail version disk. Computer Search shows
*15* i386 folders but no winnet.exe nor winsys32.exe).

So, as they say "If it works, don't fix it!" Therefore, I will just wait
until I need a SFC...and maybe at that time get Windows 7 or 8.

And thanks for your kind words, Kelly. I am really a Greatgrandmother (of
3), and being alone, I just play with computing to keep the brain stimulated!
I *will* keep "going" as I'm not ready to give up yet! : -)
